Mentoring

Since sharing my posts on how to apply for PhD scholarships in early 2017, I got many messages inquiring this process. Answering to these questions could be time consuming, but mostly fruitful. My mentoring just got started like that.

Mentoring is a challenging but rewarding journey. Not just does it guide mentees to the success of their lives, but, for me, much more importantly, helps them grow up. By growing up, I mean that they get to understand and coordinate with their selves - the 'other' inside their mind and body. When they are fully aware of themselves, strengths and weaknesses included, they will be able to achieve anything, let alone scholarships.

To date, I have been offered the following scholarships:
  • 2017-2020: Monash Graduate Scholarship and Monash International Postgraduate Research Scholarship, Monash University
  • 2016: Three postgraduate research scholarship offers from Flinders University, Latrobe University, and the University of Canberra.
  • 2012: Australian Development Scholarship, Australian Government.

Premium advice from Kien has widely opened the doorway to my PhD research

Kien continuously motivated me to pursue doctoral study in Australia and he truly helped make it happen. Kien instructed me on how to prepare my application, targeting the most appropriate programs, and most importantly, writing a scholarship-winning proposal. He spent hours assisting me in shaping my research topic, looking for seminal books on strengthening my theoretical framework, and went further to turn it into an attractive selling part of my application package. My application process became so fluid thanks to his thorough guidance which he gained from his own experience within the Australian postgraduate system. I got acceptance from potential supervisors in less than 2 weeks after I sent out my proposal and was awarded full scholarships in both universities I applied to.

* Trang Do obtained full PhD scholarships from Monash University and University of New South Wales in 2017. She is now a PhD candidate at Monash University doing her research in medical anthropology.

I was lucky enough to have Kien as my mentor on my PhD proposal. He took time out of his schedule to meet with me and tell me about his experience when he was writing his proposal. It was very useful, and even comforting, to know that he had gone through everything I was going through and made it out okay. Moreover, he sat down with me at every step of the Resume preparation, giving me extremely helpful advice on steps to take and things to look for. I think it's fair to say that Kien gave me tremendous confidence going into my PhD journey.

* Hung Duong obtained Capital Markets Cooperative Research Centre (CMCRC) Scholarship and International Research Tuition Scholarship (IRTS) from the University of South Australia for his PhD program in 2017.
